It is clear that due to the increasing rate at which the deadly COVID-19 pandemic is moving in Nigeria and the world as a whole, we will not be able to get back to our usual way of life anytime soon. Irrespective of that, we have to move on at some point and the Lagos State Judiciary has taken a huge step into the future by conducting the very first online court proceeding ever in Nigeria.
The court session, for the charge marked ID/9006C/2019 delivered a judgment in a murder and stealing trial involving one Olalekan Hameed. The defendant in this case was convicted and sentenced to death.
UPDATE: The Defendant was convicted & sentenced to death
The Judge held that:
“The sentence of this court upon you, Olalekan Hameed, is that you be hanged by neck until you be pronounced dead & may the Lord have mercy upon your soul. This is the virtual judgment of the court”

This is a huge step for the delivery of justice in Nigeria and one that FRC is fully in support of as we move into the uncertain future that awaits us post-coronavirus.
